About the Book
Sonja loves mud, frogs, her dog, and her house at the end of the cul-de-sac. Then one night at dinner, her parents say three words that make her whole world feel shaky: “We are moving!”
The beach house is small. She doesn’t know a single kid. But on the drive there, her dad stops the car to introduce her to Freddy, a seagull sitting on a piling above Puget Sound.
Freddy sticks with Sonja through a new school, a jet ski she keeps falling off, and a trip to camp on Vashon Island. He’s there when she grows up and leaves for college. After her mom dies, Sonja brings her nieces to the beach, and there’s Freddy, right where she left him. She tells them everything he taught her.
Based on Sonja’s childhood, Freddy the Seagull shows children that change may be scary, but that everything can still turn out okay.

Sonja wrote Freddy the Seagull with school counselors, grief counselors, and teachers in mind, along with the children they work with. It’s a good fit for grief support groups, bereavement camps, and families in the middle of a move or a loss.
